Trying to discover the Holy Grail of SEO?

As a SEO consultant, the one question I have encountered over and over again is: What is the secret of ranking #1 on Google? Most of them get disappointed when they hear my answer. It's as if they wanted to hear some highly classified secret only available to a select few. Perhaps they anticipated they would discover the holy grail of SEO success. But alas, neither am I the Indiana Jones nor is there any secret to top rankings on Google or Bing.

The problem lies in the fact that newbie SEO consultants and SEO clients believe that they can trick or game the search engine in to placing their site on top. So there must be some secret to confusing the search engines algorithm in to placing their site on the first page. I know that this belief is shared by thousands of people as can be judged from the plethora of e-books that sell these secrets to anyone who can pay few dollars. These books claim that anybody who reads and follow what they teach will earn easy money and get loads of traffic. Only if that would have been so easy.

Actually these people are correct. There is a secret for ranking at the top. You can actually spam a search engine. The only problem is that these people entered the scene bit late. These secret techniques used to work five years back and not anymore! There was a time when keyword stuffing in the title tag, keywords tags and content worked. Even black hat techniques like cloaking, hidden text, doorway pages worked. But times have changed and so have the search engines. The search engines have now become more sophisticated, more intelligent and much better in providing its users with the best results. There is a good probability that if you try these shady tactics today, you will be penalized and will be condemned to internet anonymity for a long time.

Any internet marketer or website owner who wants to rank well should think sanely about his business. If the business is not a fly by night operation then I don't see any reason to adopt tactics which will at best give very short term advantages and in most cases will be counter productive. These so called secrets can also ruin reputation of your business. A website owner should aim at providing the users with relevant and useful information in a most easy way. That means good content, with natural density of keywords in a text format, which is highly relevant to the business the website is promoting. Also, try to get good quantity and quality of back links to your site. Any good site with informative content can get other sites to link back. Many times bloggers will post your link on their blogs because your site maybe beneficial to his/her blog readers as well. Other ways are making few articles and submitting regularly to top article directories. Articles not only provide good back links but also enhance your site's credibility.

In case, you don't have time to cover all these SEO activities you can hire a SEO company which can deliver services like website analysis, keywords selection, website optimization, content writing, directory submission, article writing and submission.

Search Engine Optimization Guide for Beginners – Anchor Text

Anchor text is the content that is placed within the anchor tag and users will see as a clickable text and on clicking it the user is taken to a new page. It is also known as link label or link title and can be one of the most important factors in determining the traffic and ranking of a site in Google.

Anchor text tells site visitors & search engines what the page, you're linking to, is about. As you maybe aware links on a web page can be of two types. Internal links point to other pages on the same website and external links point to content on other websites. In either of these cases, the more accurate the anchor text is, the easier it is for users and search engine bots to judge page's topic and navigate to that page.

There are few guidelines on how to optimize the Anchor text. Anchor text for a link should be descriptive. It should give visitor an idea what the page linked is about. A SEO consultant should be careful and avoid generic anchor text like “Click Here”, “page”, “this article” etc. These are absolute waste and leave visitors clueless. The anchor text should be accurate and not misinform users. They should not be off topic and should be related to the page been pointed. Many times, a web page's URL is used as anchor text. This is not recommended apart from in few instances.

The anchor text should be crisp and concise. Care should be taken not to make it very long. Long sentences and paragraphs should not be anchor text. Anchor text should be descriptive but short. Keywords or key phrases should be used to send the message home. This is very vital when SEO and backlink campaign is involved.

A SEO consultant should also ensure that anchor text should be clearly visible to a user. They should not look like regular text. This is also against user interface principles. By default, anchor text gets underlined when mouse pointer is placed over it. CSS and text styling which modifies this behavior and make anchor text appear like a regular text should be avoided. A user should be able to distinguish between anchor text and other text so as to not miss the links or click unintentionally. Same factors should be kept in mind while creating anchor text for internal links. This helps a user in navigating within a website easily. This also increases the chances of all your pages been spidered by Google bots. The anchor text should be made keeping a user in mind and not just for search engines. Unnecessary internal links should be avoided as they may confuse a user.

Search Engine Optimization Guide for Beginners - Content is King

How often do we see a site which has little or no relevant content? Everyone must have heard “Content is the King” phrase. Yes, it's an oft repeated and very clichéd but the fact is that it is important for a very good reason. A site with useful, relevant and compelling content is more likely to influence your websites rankings in search Engines than any other factor. Users will flock to a site again and again, which has a good content. They will recommend others to do so by putting up backlinks, by bookmarking, by social media sites, forums or simply word of mouth. Come to think of it like a great movie. Yes, good marketing and publicity helps but what makes viewers come back again and again to theatres to watch the movie again is its content. This human behavior is replicated everywhere.

If a website is offering great information or some kind of service, then users would like to take advantage of it, become its member. Perhaps a blogger may post its reference on his/her next post and so on.

So what are things we have to keep in mind while writing content for a website?

1) Easy to read and follow: The website should have lucid and easy to read content which makes it available to a larger demography. Spelling and grammatical mistakes may tarnish the reputation, so avoid them. Many sites have text embedded in images; this can make it unreadable to search engines.

2) Focused, Organized: The content should be focused on a particular topic. Different sections should be organized such that users can easily access the content. Web pages with large content may be broken down in to pages with clear navigation. Titles, Headings, Bold, italics, tables, paragraphs and bullets should be used to make content understandable.

3) Use relevant language and phrases: Different users usually search for different phrases. An insider in any particular industry may use technical terms which may be Latin to an end user. Use words that match your audience. Still better, make content with an aim to help every section of demography.

4) Fresh & Unique: This is very vital. Make sure that your site is regularly updated with unique content. The content should not be plagiarized from other sources. It's unethical and is frowned upon by internet community. Good reputation cannot be built upon poor quality website.

5) Useful content & services: A website that provides useful content like Wikipedia or services like Yahoo's mail is more likely to be successful. Your website can also provide some useful content or services (though understandably on a smaller scale than Wikipedia or yahoo) and can get popular quickly then it's competitors.

6) Aim at users: Many webmasters design/develop a site and its content with sole aim at attracting search engines. They stuff keywords within the content which makes it quite unintelligible to a human reader. Many insert hidden text only for search engines. These actions may backfire. Your site should target the human reader first and at the same time make it accessible to search engines also.

Search Engine Optimization Guide for Beginners – Navigate your Way to Success

The navigation of a website is an important aspect. A site with easy and intuitive navigation structure allows the site visitors to easily find and reach the pages that they want. Apart from it's implication in User Interface, it also assists search engines in figuring out which pages are important. Search Engines mainly base their search results on a page level but they also like to take a macro site level view of page's importance. All sites have a home page/index page which is the main page of a site and as the term suggests is the page which is most frequented by visitors. Home page also serves as the base from where visitors are directed to various other sections of the website.

A webmaster must strive to create a naturally flowing and intuitive hierarchy. The user should be able to navigate easily from page to page and section to section. Webmaster should avoid complex webs of internal links in which every page is linked to every page. “Breadcrumbs” – a row of internal links located at top or bottom of site should be used effectively to enable the site visitor to navigate back to main section or home page. Use text links as much as possible as they can be read easily by search engines. Webmasters are also advised to have useful 404 page that guides the user back to a relevant section or page with a link back the home page in case site visitor encounters a broken link or types in an incorrect URL. Generic messages like “page not found” should be avoided and appropriate messages should be used. Also, 404 custom pages should have same look and feel as rest of the website.

Small sites generally have a small number of pages. For a website with lot of content and subject matter, it may be better to divide each subject and its matter in to separate web pages. In ecommerce sites, there are usually hundreds of categories, sub categories and numerous products. In such cases, the site structure may have different directories and pages for each of them. This is will provide logical and physical hierarchy in a site.

A home page may not have (and is not advisable also) to have links to all the pages of a site. In such cases to ensure that visitors and search engine bots are able to know what all pages are there in the website and effectively navigate to pages of their choices, along with a navigation menu, a sitemap is also provided. A sitemap is a webpage that shows the structure of a website and has a hierarchical listing of all the pages. A sitemap has very important implications for Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine bots while visiting a sitemap is able to get a listing of all pages and hence crawl all the web pages. Site visitors can also use sitemap to access in case of difficult in navigation. A sitemap is primarily for human consumption.

An XML Sitemap with a standard defined by Google has also been introduced, which makes it easier for Google bots to crawl through your site.

Sitemaps should be kept up to date to avoid any broken links.

Search Engine Optimization Guide for beginners – URL Structure

Continuing the series on Search Engine Optimization guide for beginners, in this article we will explain how proper URL structure can improve the site's chances of ranking higher in Google and other search engines.

By creating descriptive categories and filenames for the web pages of your website, you not only keep the site better organized and systematic, but it can also benefit you in terms of good rankings on Google for your keywords. Since the search engine bots can easily crawl your organized website, search engines will be able to glean much more information from your site. Webmaster can also create search engine friendly URLs. These URLs are not only more legible and easier to understand, but also are better for those who want to place your webpage link on their website. Long and cryptic page names may put off or scare visitors. Page names (URLs) like these can be confusing and intimidating and don't serve any purpose. Such URLS are difficult to remember. A small % of users always try to go a particular website by recalling its name. But in these scenarios, your URL may elude his/her memory. Many times these long URLs are shortened due to ignorance of a user or shortage of space like in twitter where the number of characters that can be entered is limited. In these cases, the link is broken. Sometimes, the URL itself is used as anchor text, if the URL contains relevant keywords, it will assist user and search engine bots in determining the true nature and substance of the web page. This is much better than an unintelligible URL with loads of parameters which does not help in any way in improving your rankings.

Also, in search engine search results pages, just below the webpage's title and description snippet, the URL to the webpage is provided. And if the search query matches the words in the URL, then those words appear in bold. This immediately signals to the user making the search that this page is relevant.

Webmaster should avoid URLs with unnecessary session IDs and parameters. While adding keywords to URL is a good idea, don't go overboard with it. A simple and intuitive directory structure also helps bots. Avoid deep nested subdirectories and also keep name of the directories relevant.

Search Engines are getting sophisticated with each passing days and unlike in earlier days, they can now crawl pages with any kind of URL structure – simple or complex. But it's in webmaster's interest to keep the URL as simple and relevant as possible. Few minutes and bit of care in selecting and making search engine friendly URL can help both users and search engines in long run. This can also be done using URL rewriting technique in case of dynamically generated web pages.

Adhering to above mentioned guidelines can benefit any webmaster in more than one way. User Interaction ease as well as benefits from better rankings makes these suggestions important in today's highly competitive business scenario. So be wise.

SEO Guide for Beginners - Meta Tags

Continuing on our series on SEO for beginners, we will discuss Meta tags. Hypertext Markup Language or HTML lets author of a webpage specify more details about the document rather than the document content itself using Meta data.

The information that is in the Meta data is used by search engines like Google to update their database. Search Engines figure out that a webpage is related to some keywords and when someone searches for a particular keyword, s/he will be able to find this page in SERPs. The Meta tags are generally located near the top of the HTML document inside the Header tag.

According to W3C, “Each META element specifies a property/value pair. The name attribute identifies the property and the content attribute specifies the property's value.”

There are many types of Meta tags. But the two most crucial Meta tag for search engine indexing are the keywords and the description Meta tags. The Meta tag – “keywords” lists the keywords or key phrases that best describe the contents of the webpage in question.

In context of Google the dominant search engine, “Description” Meta tag is even more important and relevant. A webpage's “description” Meta tag provides Google and other search engines a summary of what the webpage is all about. Unlike a page's title which should ideally consist of few words, a description Meta tag can be a sentence or even short paragraph. The reason the Description Meta tag is important is because Google may decide to use it as a snippet for your pages when showing your site's listing on search results. In case, Google search engine notices that your page text content is more relevant to the user's query then Google may show that snippet from the webpage's text content. So it's advisable that webmasters and SEO consultants make the best use of this tag. A well written Meta tag can also make a difference to page rankings.

Also, when a user searches for a keyword in Google search engine, the results show description tag with keywords in bold. This immediately gives searcher clues if the result has the matching keywords and if it is relevant. A proper Meta tag may also results in higher click through and hence more traffic.

Few points should be kept I mind while creating meta tag description. Describe the page accurately in the description tag. Description Meta tag helps both search engines and user alike so it should match your site's content and title. Avoid generic or default description provided by WYSIWYG editors. Never add unrelated description, this is spamming and Search Engines may not take it lightly. Also, always create unique description Meta tags for all pages of the website.

To check if your description Meta tags conform to Google's guidelines, Google provides Webmaster Tools provides a content analysis section that analyses and points out if any description Meta tags is too short, long, or duplicated too many times across the website.
